WGRZ-TV is the local NBC affiliate airing on channel 2 for the greater Buffalo, NY area. WGRZ-TV is owned by TEGNA Inc. and produces local news and programming. News segments include health, business and consumer topics. The station was founded in 1954, and joined Gannett in 1997. It has a weekly audience of 461,000 TV households. The WGR Corporation was first given a license in August 1954. WGR purchased stations in Kansas City, Bakersfield, Harrisonburg, WV and other markets. They became Transcontinent Television Corporation, headquartered in Buffalo, NY. In 1964, Transcontinent was purchased by the Taft Broadcasting Company of Cincinnati. In May 1983, WGR was acquired by General Cinema Corporation of Boston. At that time, the letter Z was added to the call letters. Three years later, the station was sold to SJL Broadcast Management. In October 1988, the station was acquired by Tak Communications. In December 1995, it became a part of Hearst-Argyle. Gannett purchased WGRZ-TV in January 1997.
