WGAL-TV is the NBC affiliate on channel 8 in the greater Lancaster, Harrisburg and York, PA areas. WGAL-TV is owned by Hearst Television Inc., and produces and broadcasts local news. The station first went on the air on March 18, 1949. At that time, it operated on channel 4. The first local newscast was broadcast by WGAL-TV on May 5, 1949. The 15-minute newscast included a sports commentary by anchor Dave Brandt. In 1952, the station was allowed to increase power from 1000 to 7200 watts. Also in that year, the first program to be telecast by WGAL-TV over channel 8 was aired. It was a prize fight between Jake LaMotta and Danny Nardico. The station first aired in color on January 1, 1954. The station began transmitting in stereo in 1985, the first in the state to do so. On February 6, 1990, WGAL-TV expanded to a 24-hours a day, seven days a week operation. WGAL-TV celebrated 50 years of broadcast service in 1999.
