KUOW-FM is a non-commercial station owned by the University of Washington. The format of the station is news and talk programming. KUOW-FM's tagline is "KUOW 94.9." The target audience of the station is adults, ages 18 to 64. KUOW-FM broadcasts to the Seattle area at 94.9 FM.
Broadcasting for the first time on January 14, 1952, KUOW-FM was established when Seattle benefactor Dorothy Bullitt donated a radio frequency to the University of Washington. Primarily operating as a training ground for students to learn about broadcast techniques and technology, KUOW-FM was on the air for eight to 10 hours each day. Programming fare changed quarterly and included classical and folk music, university lectures, local news and UW basketball games. The annual operating budget for KUOW-FM in its fiscal year 2001 was over $5,300,000. KUOW broadcasts at 100,000 watts from the Capitol Hill transmitter. KUOW-FM's signal reaches west to the Olympic Peninsula and east to the Cascade Mountains.
KUOW-FM is the recipient of several national, international, local and regional awards within the past decade, including: 2000 National Headliner Award Outstanding Coverage of a Live News Event Battle in Seattle for coverage of the World Trade Organization (WTO) conference and protests; 2000 New York Festivals International Competition Silver Medal for Best Sound, Finalist Certificate for Best Writing; and 1999 New York Festivals Gold Medal for Best Writing.
The outlet offers RSS (Really Simple Syndication) and a digital Podcast.
