Gorkana Alert: Thursday 6 February 2014
Global, the UK’s leading music & entertainment company, has announced it has agreed a deal to divest radio stations in the regions required by the Competition Commission to Communicorp. It is the leading radio company in Ireland and was the successful acquirer in a competitive sales process and has been approved by the Competition Commission as a suitable owner of the divested stations.
The stations that Global has sold to Communicorp are Capital South Wales, Capital Scotland, Smooth East Midlands, Smooth North West, Smooth North East. Real North Wales, Real Yorkshire and Real XS Manchester. All stations required to be divested by the CC are being sold in one deal. The stations have been sold on a brand licence model which means that Global has licensed its award winning brands to Communicorp. As a result of the deal all existing Real stations will be relaunched as Heart. In addition the Capital network will be enhanced with a new station in North Wales. Smooth will grow to become the fourth largest radio brand in the UK, behind Capital, Heart and Classic FM.
Stephen Miron, Global’s Group CEO said: “We are delighted to have agreed this deal with Communicorp so quickly. Most importantly the conclusion of this deal solidifies Global’s position as the number one commercial radio company in the UK, and enables our brands to continue to grow, extending their reach into all parts of the UK, making Global’s offering truly national. The future launch of Heart in five new regions, Smooth in many new regions and a new Capital in North Wales is particularly exciting and enables us to continue our strategy of ‘national brands de
