About
Bio
Democrat & Chronicle began in 1833 as The Balance. Soon after, the name changed to the Daily Democrat. In 1870, the paper combined with the two-year-old Chronicle to become the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. The newspaper aims to "be the highest valued source of news, information and advertising services in the Greater Rochester market." It was awarded Gannett's Outstanding Achievement Award for best overall performance in 1997.
The paper features major local, regional, national and world news. Local stories come from around the city and surrounding suburbs. Business coverage includes national and world economic news, stock listings, and features on its "big three" local companies (Kodak, Xerox, B&L), as well as start-ups and entrepreneurs. Rochester Living, the lifestyle and feature section, was redesigned in 1996 and focuses on a different informational topic every day of the week: Sunday features arts, travel, and books; Monday features health; Tuesday features relationships; Wednesday features personal finance; Thursday features family; Friday features entertainment; and Saturday features home. Sports coverage includes news from around the region and nation.
Part of the newspaper's mission statement promises "high quality news content produced by our award-winning staff of reporters and editors ... It's this kind of quality that has drawn over 37,600 new readers ... in less than two years." The Democrat and Chronicle reaches 16 counties and eight regional zones. The paper honors non-disclosure agreements.
