Background and Format:
Established in 1931 as the Chronicle & Echo, the Northampton Chronicle & Echo (nicknamed the “Chron”) is a weekly regional newspaper. The publication emerged from two earlier titles, the Northampton Daily Chronicle and Evening Herald (founded 1880) and the Daily Echo (founded as the Northampton Daily Reporter in 1885, retitled as the Northampton Daily Reporter & Echo in 1906 and as the Northampton Daily Echo in 1908). It was an evening title until May 2012 when Johnston Press announced that five evening titles would switch to weekly publication. At the same time, those newspapers’ websites would become the focus for up-to-date news, supported by iPad/iPhone apps.

Following the departure of Sports Editor Garry McGurk from the Daventry Express, the company has decided to merge the Sports Editor roles on the Northampton Chronicle & Echo and the Daventry Express. Johnston Press are switching five of their daily regional newspapers to weeklies as part of a re-launch of its entire regional publishing business. From late May, The Scarborough Evening News, Halifax Courier, Northampton Chronicle & Echo, Peterborough Evening Telegraph and Northants Evening Telegraph will publish seven-day online content with one print edition coming out each week. Changes will also be made to the websites, including improvements to the home pages and the social networking and commenting functionalities. Johnston Press is planning to re-launch all of its 170 paid-for titles and associated websites by the end of 2012. Further details will be revealed on 25 April and will coincide with Johnston Press’ 2011 annual results announcement.
