The paper is one of the most widely read and longest running Spanish-language newspapers in the country. It was first published in 1926. Previously focused on Mexico and Mexican and Mexican-American issues, the paper now serves a broader Hispanic readership with coverage of news and cultural topics from Central and South America, Cuba, Puerto Rico and The United States, in addition to international wire content. It is the recipient of a 2006 Jose Ortega y Gasset Award from El Pais newspaper in Spain.
