Created in 1966 and edited for computer industry professionals of all disciplines including including OEM and the scientific and engineering end-users. Reports and commentary convey information on everything from chips to systems, from hardware to software, and from current research to future applications. Regular features include late breaking news, business trends, Internet developments, and a variety of technology-specific departments. Coverage includes application software and encryption such as SSL (secure socket layer), object-oriented products, trends of the industry, operating systems, languages, networking, client/server technology, management of software projects, graphics and working high-performance computing techniques.
The magazine has four basic types of feature articles: Computing Practices, features that focus on practical solutions to common problems; Perspectives, a forum for critical thinkers to speculate about computing and computers; Cover Features, articles pertaining to the topics listed in the editorial calendar written by staff or guest editors; and Research Features, articles describing research that addresses a specific problem in computing.
The remaining pages of the magazine include the following departments: New Products/Bookshelf, a department containing new product and new book information; News, a section covering news developments in computer technology and industry trends; Communications, a bimonthly department focusing on cutting-edge advances in the physical layer of the network; The Profession, a column tackling key issues facing those in the profession, craft, and trade of computer engineering; Software Technologies, a bimonthly department surveying cutting-edge emerging technologies with an eye toward finding that a new idea to augment established practice; Entertainment Computing, a bimonthly column chronicling developments and how they help shape computing; Standards, a bimonthly department that takes a behind-the-scenes look at the people and processes that determine standards; IT Systems Perspectives, a bimonthly column that looks at the human and technical factors that lead to the successful deployment of new information technologies; and Security, a bimonthly department that looks at recent security hacks as well as the architectural issues underlying strong security.
