WOOD-TV is the local NBC affiliate on Channel 8 for the greater Grand Rapids, MI area. WOOD-TV's predecessor, WLAV-TV, began broadcasting on Channel 7 on August 15, 1949. The station was owned by Leonard Versluis. In 1951, the owner of WOOD-AM/FM radio, Grandwood Broadcasting, purchased WLAV-TV and changed its call letters to WALV-TV. On December 8, 1953, the station made the switch from Channel 7 to Channel 8. At that time, the station also increased its power from 28,000 to 100,000 watts. WOOD-TV was the first station in Western Michigan to broadcast in color. In 1953, WOOD-TV increased its power to 316,000 watts. In 1955, WOOD-TV made the move to its current address. In 1957, WOOD-TV was purchased by Time, Inc. In 1999, the station celebrated 50 years of broadcasting. It has received numerous awards, including eight awards for excellence from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters in 1997, one of those being Station of the Year.
