WBUR debuted in 1950 as a low-power educational station owned by Boston University. In 1971, the station had enough full-time employees to qualify as a public radio station certified by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The station became a National Public Radio member station in 1980 and established its identity as a news station.

WNYC-FM remained a municipal entity until January 27, 1997, when Mayor Giuliani privatized it and its sister station, WNYC-AM. WNYC-FM and -AM are National Public Radio member stations.
