Red Cross Blog is a commercial charity weblog based in London, aimed at a UK audience. It is the official blog from the British Red Cross, a volunteer-led humanitarian organisation that helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. It was founded in 1870 and its mission is defined by seven characteristics that are humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality. The British Red Cross' vision is of a world in which everyone receives the help they need in a crisis. According to their website they say, "Our core purpose is to mobilise the power of humanity so that individuals and communities have the capacity to prepare for, deal with and recover from crisis."
The Red Cross Blog is written by volunteers and staff of the British Red Cross and is a window into how they go about helping people in a crisis 365 days a year. It is worth noting that the views that appear on the blog are peoples' personal views of being part of the Red Cross, so do not necessarily reflect the organisation as a whole. The blog offers the latest news from the British Red Cross, but also gives an insight into the work done by volunteers and staff members at the British Red Cross. On average the blog is updated every few days and posts tend to be up to 500 words in length, they tend to feature images and videos too. The Red Cross Blog was founded in 2008 and bylines are given to all Bloggers who contribute to the Red Cross Blog.
The blog aims to raise awareness for people in crisis, and not just in the UK. A large percentage of content is focused on continents like Asia and Africa, as crisis in those parts of the world are more likely to go unnoticed. Much of the content is timely and focuses on events like International Women's Day, Women's History Month, World Water Day, the Noble Peace Prize and so on. Off the back of those days in the yearly calendar the blog runs regular features such as 'Five formidable women who shaped the Red Cross' or 'Why charity shops are good for the high street'. The blog also runs retrospectives following natural disasters in years gone by, for example the Haiti earthquake in 2010 or the 2011 earthquake that hit Japan. The most popular categories blogged about include Emergencies, First aid, Fundraising and events, Health and social care, International, News, Podcasts, UK, Volunteering and Young volunteers. The Red Cross Blog also regularly runs competitions and has some light-hearted posts on seasonal topics.
PR opportunities are not obvious, because the blog is used for self-promotion on what is happening at the Red Cross and elsewhere in the world. However, opportunities do exist, and if you have an idea or pitch the best way to contact the Red Cross Blog is on the email address provided above. Alternatively they can be reached via telephone or via post.

TThe Chronicle of Philanthropy
The Chronicle of Philanthropy provides news and information for non-profit executives, fundraisers, and professional employees of foundations. The publication covers trends in giving, fundraising, grant making, volunteers, management and professional development. Regular features include profiles of foundations, updates on federal and state regulations, tax and court rulings, and a calendar of events. Unless something is urgent, they prefer contact by email rather than phone. Press Releases should be relevant to nonprofit practitioners across the country, and if there's been a recent article about a similar development at a different organization, they probably won’t cover it again soon. They like: stories about best or innovative practices in fundraising and managing organizations, profiles of interesting charity leaders, fundraisers, and donors, and new trends in giving or fundraising. They usually don’t cover: galas, celebrity events, groundbreakings and ribbon cuttings, and gifts of less than $1 million. The Chronicle’s Opinion section is designed to spark robust debate about all aspects of the nonprofit world. They welcome Op-Ed submissions that provide new insights and promote innovative thinking about leadership, fundraising, grant-making policy, and more. They especially appreciate articles about timely topics. Most of the pieces are about 1,000 to 1,200 words.
ViewIInside PhilanthropyIntended to be a source for day-to-day coverage of how foundations and individual donors give away their money and why.
