It does not air local news. The station began broadcasting in October 1970. WFYI-TV was spawned due to the efforts of the late Ardath Y. Burkhart and the women who she organized to help raise money for the station. In 1986, the station acquired the frequency 90.1 FM and consequently extended its contribution to public broadcasting to include public radio. In 1995, Central Indiana Radio Reading, Inc. (CIRRI) became a part of WFYI-TV. Children's programming comprises thirty percent of the station's weekly schedule.
