Local World, in exclusive partnership with Google, has launched new apps for 10 evening edition newspapers. The free apps will be delivered to Android mobile and tablet handsets every workday at 5pm to capture the engagement of the homeward-bound commuter and to offer readers a collection of the most important and entertaining content from their city. The first wave of titles in Local World’s portfolio to publish the new apps are the The Post (Bristol), Cambridge News, Derby Telegraph, Gloucestershire Echo, Hull Daily Mail, Leicester Mercury, Nottingham Post, South Wales Evening Post, The Sentinel (Stoke) and The Herald (Plymouth). iOS versions of the apps will be available later in the year.

Leicester Mercury has relaunched with a contemporary, brighter look. The Local World title will carry extra content, pagination and colour-coded sections. In addition, a new women’s section will be available on Monday, and sports coverage has been extended. The makeover means that the paper is easier for the readers to navigate. Local media business Local World has purchased the assets of former regional publishing groups Northcliffe Media and Iliffe News and Media. As a result, the new group now owns 16 daily newspapers, 36 paid-for weeklies, 40 free weeklies and 63 local websites.
