Background and Format: Founded in March 2001, Giving Nation is a Citizenship Foundation project that supports young people undertaking work to support charities and their community. It aims to enable them to gain an understanding of the charity sector, alongside taking action to address issues that are important to them. The website provides free curriculum teaching and learning resources, ideas and inspiration. It is split into two programmes; Giving Nation Challenge - an active learning programme for secondary schools, which supports young people to identify and rectify an issue within their community that they feel passionate about. Generally over a six week period students set up, run and evaluate a social enterprise or charity fundraising project, utilising start-up capital from the Cabinet Office to benefit their community; Giving Nation Spirit - a programme launched in 2012, designed for 11 to 16 year olds in PRUs, special schools, SEN/BD schools, SEN classes in mainstream schools and Young Offender Institutes.
