WAVY-TV is the local NBC affiliate on Channel 10 for the greater Virginia Beach, Portsmouth and Norfolk areas. The station is owned and operated by Nexstar Media Group, Inc. Local news airs daily, mornings and evenings. WAVY-TV went on the air on September 1, 1957. It was originally started by Tidewater Teleradio as a radio station, WAVY-AM. WAVY-TV was bought in 1968 by LIN Broadcasting, Inc. In 1998, LIN Broadcasting was purchased by Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst, Inc., a private investment firm in Dallas. WAVY was the first local station to broadcast in "living color" in 1957. It was also the first local station to broadcast in stereo in 1985. The station airs an informative talk show for children entitled Kid Talk. WAVY is also the sister station to WVBT-TV, a FOX affiliate broadcasted in the Portsmouth, VA area that shares the same building, newsroom staff and news content. The station accepts 10, 30 and 60 second PSAs in Beta format.
