WGN-TV is an independent station in the Chicago market. The station is owned by Nexstar Media Group. WGN-TV broadcasts locally on channel 9, and covers local news, sports, and entertainment. It originally signed on the air in 1948 and is famous for creating such local icons as Ray Rayner, Garfield Goose and Bozo the Clown. In 1978, WGN-TV became a "superstation," broadcasting to cable viewers all around the country. In 1980, WGN-TV launched the Midwest's first hour-long newscast in prime-time, WGN News at Nine.
