WDTN-TV debuted on March 15, 1949 as WLWD-TV, owned by Crosley Broadcasting Corporation. It then changed hands multiple times from Avco Broadcasting, Grinnell Communications Corporation to Hearst Broadcasting. In 1998, WDTV-TV was acquired by Sunrise Television Corporation. Then in 2002, WDTN-TV was purchased by its current owner, LIN Television Corp. Over the years WDTN-TV has been a pioneering station setting industry trends in many different areas.
