It originally signed on the air in 1948 and is famous for creating such local icons as Ray Rayner, Garfield Goose and Bozo the Clown. In 1978, WGN-TV became a "superstation," broadcasting to cable viewers all around the country. In 1980, WGN-TV launched the Midwest's first hour-long newscast in prime-time, WGN News at Nine. WGN-TV became a WB affiliate in 1995, after years as an independent entity. The station later became a CW affiliate in 2006, before going back independent in September 2016.
