The station is owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group, Inc., and covers news, sports, and weather at various times throughout the day. WWMT-TV started out as a radio station back in 1931. Six years later, the station moved to its current home on West Maple Street in Kalamazoo, MI. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, a variety of local live shows were offered. From Monday through Friday, kids were the stars of Channel 3 Clubhouse, which aired until 1983. On Saturday, Rem Wall and the Green Valley Boys were shown on the Green Valley Jamboree. In 1968, Channel 3 began broadcasting in color. Also during the 1960s, Fetzer purchased the Detroit Tiger baseball team and WKZO-TV became the television home of the Tigers in West Michigan. In 1983, Fetzer sold the television and radio stations. The new owners changed the call letters to WWMT-TV. In the mid-1990s, the station was sold again. Granite Broadcasting was the new owner and proceeded to upgrade WWMT-TV's image. As a result, there were new graphics, music, and news sets. In 1998, Freedom Communications Inc. purchased the station. PR professionals can contact the assignment desk with story ideas and breaking news by phone, fax, or mail.
