KMEX-TV is the Univision affiliate for the Los Angeles market. The station is owned by Univision Communications Inc. KMEX-TV broadcasts locally on channel 34. Local news airs weekdays and weekends. It is the sister station of KFTR-TV in Los Angeles, the UniMas affiliate on channel 46. KMEX-TV was founded on September 29, 1962 as Southern California's first UHF station. KMEX-TV has been Los Angeles' premier Spanish-language television station since then: educating, entertaining, and informing the Hispanic community on the latest events and news. Since its birth, the station has been a pioneer in many aspects. It was the first to change successfully from film to videotape and use satellite transmission in the Los Angeles news market. KMEX-TV was also the first station nationally to create a Spanish-language morning talk show, Los Angeles al Dia, airing for more than a decade. KMEX-TV's news department has received numerous journalistic awards throughout the years. In 1996, Noticias 34 received six Golden Mike Awards by the Radio & TV News Association of Southern California, and was the recipient of the Los Angeles Area Governor's Emmy Award given by the Board of Governors of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS).
