PETA UK Blog
PETA UK blog is a commercial charity weblog based in London, aimed at a UK audience. It is the official blog from the animal charity, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), which was founded in 1994. The charity believes that, "animals have rights and deserve to have their best interests taken into consideration, regardless of whether they are useful to humans. Like you, they are capable of suffering and have an interest in leading their own lives." The charity's main focus includes factory farms, laboratories, the clothing trade and the entertainment industry. They work through public education, cruelty cases, special events, celebrity involvement and protest campaigns. The PETA UK blog is written by staff members who work for PETA, but it also features contributions from guest bloggers who have expertise in specific fields. The blog started in April 2010 and have a total of seven regular bloggers, who work for PETA and it is updated on average every couple of days. The blog provides a place for PETA to announce any news and update their members on any developments. Although Animal Writes is a UK based blog, it does provide developments from the international teams of PETA. Along with stories relating to PETA, the blog also provides information on a matter of animal related subjects and due to this there is a cross over into some political issues. The blog is broken down into a number of different categories, which include Animal Testing, Animals in Entertainment, General Animal Rights, Companion Animals, Cruelty to Animals, Recipes, Skins, Vegan, Victory, Wildlife and Youth. The content of the blog is strictly against the consumption of meat and usage of products of meat. So, as expected a lot of the content is serious and provides policy issues on the treatment of animals. However, a large percentage of the content is at times humorous and satirical of people's need for animal products. A lot of the content is based around campaigns and fundraising events that PETA are involved in. PR opportunities are not obvious, because the blog is mainly used for self-promotion on PETA developments and updates. However, opportunities do exist, and if you have an idea or pitch the best way to contact PETA is on the email address provided above. Alternatively they can be reached via telephone or via post.
