Founded by M.D. Smith Jr., at the time, it was called WBRC Radio. In 1931, the station went from 500 to 5,000 watts. In 1932, the station employed 20 people and was an NBC affiliate. Mr. Smith died in 1937. In 1940, when fellow stock holder J.C. Bell died, Mr. Smith's widow, Eloise Smith became the sole owner. She married Dr. Hanna and became Eloise H. Hanna. She founded WBRC-TV in 1949, and in 1953, decided to retire. She sold WBRC-TV/AM-FM to Storer Broadcasting. In 1954, WBRC-TV made the switch to the CBS Network and on September 1, 1961 the station once again changed affiliates, this time to the ABC Network. On September 1, 1996, WBRC-TV became an affiliate of the FOX Network.
