KHOU-TV is the CBS affiliate for the Houston market and broadcasts locally on channel 11. Daily broadcasts cover local news, weather, and sports. KHOU-TV first hit the airwaves in March 1953 as KGUL-TV in Galveston. KGUL was owned by a group of Galveston and Houston investors, including actor Jimmy Stewart, whose voice was one of the first heard on-air. In 1959 the station officially changed its call letters to KHOU-TV. CBS network anchor Dan Rather served as KHOU’s news director from 1960 to 1962. He also anchored the 6 and 10 o’clock newscasts and hosted a Saturday morning news program.
