Background and Format: The first copy of the Courier was issued on October 4, 1872. The founder was 28-year-old Matthew Andrew Harris Edwardes, who launched the paper with two issues on a Friday – one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Classified advertising ran on the front page until an horrific murder of a little girl when the front was dedicated to news – and it stayed that way. The Courier remained in the Edwardes family until 1974 when it was sold to Associated Newspapers, part of the Daily Mail group (DMGT). It is now run by Local World. The Kent and Sussex Courier is one of the largest weekly papers in the country. It is split into the following editions: Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells, Paddock Wood, Edenbridge, Sussex and Weald.
