It is America's oldest major daily newspaper of general circulation in continuous publication. Its mission is "to publish an independent and profitable newspaper of unquestioned integrity devoted to the dissemination of local, state, national, and international news of interest and importance, and to do so in a manner noted for its excellence on a national scale while ever maintaining an outspoken voice for the welfare of Rhode Islanders." Sections include: local news, with coverage of local events; national news, featuring news from around the nation; business, focusing on both local and national trends and events; sports, with scores and summaries of local sports and college and professional teams around New England; and features, covering the arts & entertainment scene nationally and in the greater-Providence area.
