BET/Black Entertainment Television is a 24-hour entertainment and news network geared toward African Americans ages 18 to 34. It was launched in January 1980 by former cable industry lobbyist Robert Johnson. The advertiser-supported cable network serves as both a cultural center and an information resource for the black consumer. In 1980, BET began by broadcasting music videos, and 11 years later became the first black-controlled company listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). The network, which continues to be the number one cable network in all key black demographics, speaks to young adults with an authentic viewpoint of the black experience through a original and syndicated programming. The national network also provides coverage of town hall meetings that address contemporary issues facing the African American community.Viewers are 43% male and 57% female. The network is available in over 85 million homes and is distributed by BET Holdings Inc., which was purchased by Viacom in late 2000. The network does not have any daily or weekly shows that accept guests. All inquiries can go to the Public Relations Manager. BET moved its headquarters to New York City in July 2017.
